It's summertime and that means it's time for plums! But when is the best time of year to buy plums, what types are available, and where do they come from? If you're plum crazy like us, then read on for everything you need to know about plums and when to get the best ones.

When To Buy Plums

The best time of year to buy plums depends on the type of plum you are looking for. European plums (also called Prune Plums) are at their peak in late summer and early fall. These plums have a unique sweet-tart flavor and can be eaten fresh as well as cooked into jam or jelly. Japanese plums (also called Santa Rosa Plums) are ripe in mid-summer and have a sweet, juicy flavor. They make excellent desserts when poached or baked into a tart. American plums (also called Damson Plums) are ripe in late summer and have a tart flavor that makes them ideal for making pies and other desserts. Finally, hybrid plums (which combine European, Japanese, and American varieties) tend to be available all year round but have the highest quality during the late summer months.

Different Types of Plums

There are hundreds of different types of plums available around the world! The most popular variety is the Prune Plum which originated in Europe but can now be found worldwide. Other popular varieties include Damson Plums from America, Greengage Plums from England, Santa Rosa Plums from Japan, Satsuma Plums from China, Golden Nectarines from Australia, Reine Claudes from France, Persian Quince from Iran, Black Diamonds from South Africa, Mirabelle Plumbs from Germany -the list goes on! With so many varieties out there it can be hard to choose which one is right for you - so why not try them all?
